Professor Raphael Zozimus Sangeda is a distinguished academic leader, bioinformatician, and University Executive currently serving as the Acting Principal of the Kigoma Campus College and the Director of Continuing Education and Professional Development (DCEPD) at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Tanzania. He is also a Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology in the School of Pharmacy. He earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy from The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, India, and a Higher Diploma in Software Engineering from Aptech Computer Education Centre, India. He furthered his studies with an MSc in Medical Microbiology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya, before completing an Advanced Studies Master of Science in Bioinformatics, a Master's in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from KU Leuven University, Belgium.

Since joining MUHAS as a Tutorial Assistant in 2001, Professor Sangeda has advanced to the rank of Full Professor while building an internationally recognized research portfolio. An expert in bioinformatics, data science, and pharmaceutical informatics, Prof. Sangeda utilizes advanced computational tools—including R, Python, SQL, and Linux environments—to address critical public health challenges in Tanzania. His recent research portfolio focuses on longitudinal data analysis for HIV care retention, digital health security, pharmacoepidemiology, supply chain optimization, and antimicrobial consumption (AMC) tracking using a transdisciplinary and One Health approach. Professor Sangeda has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters. He is highly active in the development of health data systems and genomic capacity building, affiliating with networks such as H3ABioNet and the Sickle Pan-African Research Consortium (SPARCO) to develop multi-country clinical databases and train researchers. He is a dedicated academic mentor to junior faculty, research fellows, and trainees, while also serving as a visiting lecturer in Bioinformatics at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and the University of Dar es Salaam.

Leadership and Executive Development

An accomplished academic and administrative leader, Professor Sangeda has held several senior positions. Appointed as the Acting Principal of the Kigoma Campus College in May 2026, he continues his role as the Director of Continuing Education and Professional Development (DCEPD), a position he has held since 2024. He previously served as the MUHAS's Director of Planning, Development, and Investment from 2021 to 2023, and as Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology from 2015 to 2021. Bringing data-driven innovation to his administrative leadership at the DCEPD, Prof. Sangeda has spearheaded the modernization of institutional services, including the deployment of a robust REDCap data architecture and the launch of a digitized online short-course catalogue. At the MUHAS-Kigoma Campus, his strategic planning encompasses academic curriculum development. His leadership continually integrates molecular laboratory evidence with routine health system data, ensuring computational findings directly inform health policy and clinical practice.
