Office of Sponsored Project

Welcome to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

  • The Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) is a University’s central point of coordination for sponsored projects and the legally authorized representative for grants, contracts and assurances.

  • The Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) is the primary unit responsible for research administration and oversight at MUHAS. The unit provides assistance to researchers during grants application and award management as well as general oversight of research activities at the University. Specifically, OSP offers full circle of support in grant application process including advertisement of grant opportunities, review of applications and grants submission. Furthermore, the unit provides oversight as well as financial, human resources, administrative and technical support in the management of awards, sub-awards and contracts. The office also works to enhance institutional research capacity through provision of relevant training aimed at stimulating and supporting researchers to apply and manage extramural grants.

  • OSP represents the sum of MUHAS’s experience with extramural sponsors and partners over time, through the entire Project Lifecycle. For More Details ClickHere

Research Development Unit
Research Development Unit (RDU)

A Research Development Unit (RDU) at a university is a department or office dedicated to supporting and advancing the research activities within the institution. It plays a critical role in enhancing the university’s research capabilities by providing resources, expertise, and administrative support to faculty, researchers, and students. The RDU’s primary mission is to facilitate the development of high-quality research projects, secure external funding, and foster an environment that encourages innovation and scholarly excellence.

Key Functions of a Research Development Unit:

  1. Grant Writing and Proposal Support:

    • Proposal Development: The RDU provides assistance to researchers in developing and writing grant proposals. This includes helping to identify appropriate funding sources, reviewing proposals for compliance, and offering guidance on how to strengthen proposals to increase the chances of success.
    • Budget Assistance: Assists in the creation of project budgets, ensuring they are accurate, reasonable, and aligned with funding agency guidelines.
    • Proposal Submission: The RDU often handles the submission process, ensuring that proposals are submitted on time and meet the requirements of funding agencies.
  2. Research Funding Identification:

    • Funding Source Identification: The RDU helps faculty and researchers find potential sources of external funding, including government agencies, private foundations, corporations, and international organizations.
    • Funding Alerts: Provides researchers with updates on available funding opportunities through newsletters, email alerts, or a centralized database.
  3. Research Strategy and Planning:

    • Research Vision and Strategy: Works with university leadership and academic departments to align research initiatives with the institution’s strategic goals and priorities.
    • Research Networking: Facilitates collaboration with external institutions, industry partners, and government agencies to foster interdisciplinary research and increase funding opportunities.
  4. Compliance and Regulatory Guidance:

    • Ethical Approval: The RDU guides researchers on the ethical standards required for their projects, including research with human subjects, animal research, and compliance with environmental regulations.
    • Institutional Review Board (IRB) Assistance: The unit may assist in navigating the process of obtaining IRB approval for human subjects research.
    • Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Ensures that researchers comply with all federal, state, and institutional regulations, including intellectual property rights, contract management, and export control laws.
  5. Professional Development and Training:

    • Workshops and Seminars: Organizes training programs, workshops, and seminars to enhance researchers’ skills in proposal writing, grant management, and other aspects of research development.
    • Mentorship and Coaching: Provides one-on-one mentoring and coaching to early-career researchers, helping them navigate the complexities of securing funding and managing projects.
  6. Post-Award Support:

    • Award Administration: After a project is funded, the RDU often provides support in managing the award, including tracking expenditures, reporting, and ensuring compliance with the terms of the grant or contract.
    • Grant Reporting: Assists researchers in preparing financial and progress reports for funding agencies to ensure that ongoing funding is maintained.
  7. Collaborative Research Initiatives:

    • Facilitating Interdisciplinary Research: The RDU helps foster collaborations across departments and between researchers from different disciplines, promoting innovative interdisciplinary projects.
    • Industry Partnerships: Works with industry partners to create opportunities for applied research and technology transfer, potentially leading to commercialization of research outcomes.
  8. Research Infrastructure and Resources:

    • Research Facilities: Coordinates access to university laboratories, equipment, and other research resources.
    • Technology Transfer: Supports the commercialization of research outcomes, helping faculty protect their intellectual property and license technologies to private companies.
  9. Research Performance Metrics:

    • Monitoring and Evaluation: Tracks the performance of funded research projects, helping to assess outcomes, impact, and success.
    • Annual Reporting: Collects and analyzes data on research output (e.g., publications, patents, collaborations) for institutional reporting and strategic planning.
  10. Fostering a Research Culture:

    • Research Incentives: Promotes a culture of research excellence by providing incentives such as awards for outstanding research, collaborative grants, or recognition programs.
    • Networking and Conferences: Organizes or supports participation in academic conferences, symposiums, and research networking events to help researchers share their work and collaborate with peers.

Institutional Review Board

-Institutional Review Board (IRB)

An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee established to review and approve research involving human participants, ensuring that the research is conducted ethically and that the rights, safety, and well-being of participants are protected. The primary role of an IRB is to ensure that research studies comply with ethical guidelines and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities of an IRB:

  1. Reviewing Research Proposals: The IRB evaluates research protocols involving human participants to assess potential risks, benefits, and ethical concerns. It ensures that informed consent processes are clear and comprehensive.

  2. Ensuring Ethical Standards: The IRB ensures that the research adheres to ethical principles, such as respect for persons, beneficence (maximizing benefits and minimizing harm), and justice (fair distribution of benefits and risks).

  3. Monitoring Ongoing Research: Once approved, the IRB continues to monitor the progress of the research to ensure compliance with ethical standards. This includes reviewing any changes to the protocol and periodic progress reports.

  4. Informed Consent: The IRB reviews the methods for obtaining informed consent to ensure participants fully understand the nature of the study, potential risks, and their rights, including the right to withdraw at any time.

  5. Ensuring Participant Safety: The IRB works to ensure that risks to participants are minimized and justified by the potential benefits of the research.

  6. Compliance with Regulations: IRBs ensure that research complies with local, state, federal, and international regulations, such as the Common Rule
