Clinical Medicine

The School of Clinical Medicine(SoCM) is   among the three   Schools constuting the Campus College of Medicine at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). The SoCM was established in 2023 from   the     School of Medicine dated back to 1963, when the government of the newly independent Tanganyika started its predecessor, the Dar es Salaam School of Medicine to train licensed non-degree medical practitioners, starting with an intake of eight students. In 1968 the School was upgraded to a Faculty of Medicine (FOM) of the Dar es Salaam University College; a constituent College of the University of East Africa (UEA). With upgrading of the Dar es Salaam University College to the University of Dar es Salaam in 1970, the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) soon initiated its first degree, the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme.

A major milestone year for the Faculty of Medicine in 1977 was its administrative incorporation with the Muhimbili Hospital to form the Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC), allowing synergistic access to clinical environments for teaching with staffs contributing to service delivery. In 1991 the Faculty of Medicine was upgraded to become the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS), a constituent College of the University of Dar es Salaam a process that upgraded its Departments of Pharmacy and Dentistry to Faculties. Subsequent disestablishment of the MMC by parliament in 2000, and creation of two closely linked but legally autonomous public institutions; namely MUCHS and the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), showed support for the growth of MUCHS.

Diagnostic Medicine

Welcome to the School of Diagnostic Medicine (SoDM) at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), a distinguished institution dedicated to excellence in diagnostic healthcare education, research, and service. As one of the three schools under the College of Medicine at MUHAS, SoDM is proud to offer a comprehensive range of academic programs and research opportunities across four dynamic departments: Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Radiology and Imaging, Pathology, and Microbiology and Immunology.

SoDM provides a nurturing learning environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, offering a diverse array of programs designed to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare industry. For undergraduate program we offer Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences (BMLS), providing students with a solid foundation in clinical Laboratory services. For postgraduates, we offer specialized Master of Medicine (MMed) programs in Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Radiology and Imaging, Anatomical Pathology, and Microbiology and Immunology. Additionally, we offer Master of Science (MSc) programs in Histotechnology and Microbiology and Immunology.

At SoDM, we recognize the importance of advanced training in specialized fields. Based on this, we offer super-specialty programs in Neuroradiology, Interventional Radiology, Women Imaging, and MSc Super Specialty in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. These programs provide students with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their chosen fields and contribute to the advancement of diagnostic healthcare.

Research excellence is at the heart of SoDM’s mission. Our school is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities to support cutting-edge research endeavors. Our faculty members are engaged in groundbreaking research across a wide range of disciplines, from molecular diagnostics to medical imaging technology. We welcome researchers and collaborators from different institutions to join us at MUHAS and engage in collaborative research projects that address critical healthcare challenges and drive innovation in diagnostic medicine.
