Home -Welcome note to the Department

Welcome to the Radiology & Imaging Department of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Health Sciences (MUHAS). Radiology & Imaging Department is one among regionally recognized departments in teaching imaging techniques and technologies to diagnose and treat a wide range of health conditions.  Our teaching hospitals are Radiology Departments at Muhimbili National Hospital Upanga/Mloganzila; Muhimbili Institute of Orthopaedic (MOI) and Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI). These hospitals provide state of art diagnostic and therapeutic imaging services and thus providing a good environment for acquiring radiological skills.

 About

Radiology & Imaging Department is under the School of Diagnostic Medicine within the College of Medicine. The Department has more than 18 esteemed academician members, including professors, senior lecturers, lectures and tutorial assistants. We are the centre of excellence in training imaging clinicians and researchers. Our mission is to train highly skilled health professionals to excel in research, teaching and consultancy in Radiology fields. We are the first department in East and Central Africa to establish super-speciality degree program in Interventional Radiology and the only Department in East and Central Africa providing super speciality programs in Neuroradiology and Women’s Imaging. Our residency and fellowship programs have been attracting many candidates from various African countries and beyond. We have a Bachelor of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography program, one of only two in the country, is also recognized for the quality of its training.

Welcome Note from Department Head, Dr. Clara Chamba:

I extend a warm welcome to students, academics, researchers, collaborators, and industry partners to the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Our mission is to bridge the gap in haematology services in Tanzania and East Africa through rigorous training, impactful research, and strategic engagement with stakeholders in policymaking and industry. Karibu sana!

Our Staff Members

Head of Unit Radiology & Imaging Department

Dr. Mboka Jacob

Dr. Mboka Jacob has a background in Medicine & Radiology, having achieved her Doctor of Medicine degree at University of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania in 2004. She completed her Master of Medicine in Radiology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and the University of Bergen/Haukeland University Hospital, Norway in 2011. Her master`s project was titled “Disk Degenerative disease in Adults with low back pain referred for Lumbar spine MRI at Muhimbili National Hospital” through which she developed her knowledge and technical skills in imaging biomarkers of disease severity. In 2011, she received the MUHAS Best Student Prize in Master of Medicine in Radiology. She acquired her neuroimaging skills and knowledge at Yonsei University in 2013 and at the Child Health Institute, University College London, in 2019 (Common Wealth Scholarship). She also holds a Public Health Certificate, hosted by the International Cyber University for Health (ICUH) and the Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH). She did her PhD at MUHAS where she explored imaging biomarkers of brain injury in sickle cell disease (SCD)

Head of Microbiology and Immunology Department

Dr. Joel Pascal Manyahi

Joel Manyahi is a senior lecturer in microbiology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and a consultant in clinical microbiology at Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania. He is the current head of the department of microbiology and immunology at MUHAS. Joel has been involved in research and consulting involving antimicrobial resistance and the diagnosis, control, and prevention of infectious diseases in a resource-limited setting for the past 12 years. His desire has been to improve the diagnosis, control, and prevention of infectious diseases by focusing more on improving diagnostic stewardship. He has more than 40 publications in peer review journals. Working with the American Society for Microbiology in Tanzania, he has been able to build the local capacities of the laboratories in the diagnosis of infectious diseases as well as improve surveillance of health care-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance.

Joel holds a doctor of medicine from University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and a Master of Medicine degree in microbiology and immunology from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He also holds a PhD from the University of Bergen, Norway, where his thesis focused on antimicrobial resistance in people living with HIV and its implications for infection prevention and control.

Head of Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department

Dr. Clara Chamba

Dr. Clara Chamba is a medical specialist in haematology and blood transfusion, with more than 7 years of experience in research and training. Her research interest is in blood cancer genomics and precision diagnostics for blood cancer – with specific emphasis on leukemia and lymphoma. Pursuing this research agenda, she is validating the use of circulating cell free DNA as a bio-marker for the diagnosis and prognosis of lymphoma in children and young adults as part of my doctoral research. She is also the MUHAS site principal investigator of the multi-center, multi-disciplinary project studying Aggressive Infection –Related East African Lymphoma. Her leadership in this project has propagated capacity building for molecular diagnostics in MUHAS, through the establishment of second and third-generation sequencing platforms, coupled with training of laboratory scientists on specialized molecular techniques over the past two years. This has enabled research requiring DNA/RNA sequencing to be conducted locally. Her desire to ensure that patients benefit from precision diagnostics is accentuated in her role as co-investigator on a project analyzing mutations that contribute to the sub-optimal response to Imatinib therapy in chronic myeloid leukemia patients in Tanzania. Dr. Clara Chamba was awarded the Global Haematology Scholarship Award by the British Society of Haematology which provided her with an opportunity to visit the Oxford Molecular Diagnostic Centre, to build on my molecular diagnostic skills and help me to achieve my research and career goals.
