Dr. George M. Bwire is a Microbiologist and Implementation Scientist with an MSc in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Tanzania, and a PhD in Clinical and Epidemiological Virology from KU Leuven, Belgium (2024). He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Global Health and Implementation Science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, USA (2025–2026), following a Graduate Visiting Scholarship in Global Health and Implementation Science Research (2024) and a Harvard Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Implementation Science (2023–2024).

Dr. Bwire is a tenured Lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Tanzania. His research spans implementation science, evidence synthesis, microbiology, infectious diseases, genomic diagnostics, and health systems strengthening, with a particular focus on translating research evidence into policy and practice to improve healthcare delivery in low- and middle-income countries. He has over 10 years of research experience and has contributed to multidisciplinary projects supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Wellcome Trust, UNICEF, Sida, and other international partners.

Dr. Bwire has published more than 50 PubMed-indexed peer-reviewed scientific articles and has extensive experience conducting systematic reviews, meta-analyses, umbrella reviews, and implementation research. His current work focuses on developing and evaluating sustainable implementation strategies for decentralized genomic diagnostics, HIV drug resistance surveillance, and other innovations that strengthen laboratory systems and improve equitable access to evidence-based healthcare. He actively collaborates with national and international universities, governments, and global health organizations to advance research, capacity building, and evidence-informed policymaking.

My research aims to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and routine healthcare by integrating implementation science, evidence synthesis, and health systems research. I am particularly interested in developing, evaluating, and scaling evidence-based interventions that improve healthcare quality, accessibility, and equity in low- and middle-income countries.

My current research focuses on strengthening health systems through the implementation of innovative diagnostic technologies, particularly decentralized and near point-of-care genomic diagnostics for HIV drug resistance and other infectious diseases. I apply mixed-methods implementation research, systems thinking, and stakeholder co-design to identify barriers and facilitators to implementation and to develop sustainable strategies for integrating innovations into routine healthcare.

In parallel, I conduct systematic reviews, meta-analyses, umbrella reviews, and secondary analyses to generate high-quality evidence that informs clinical guidelines, health policy, and implementation strategies. Through multidisciplinary collaborations with academic institutions, governments, and international organizations, I strive to translate research findings into policies and practices that improve population health and strengthen resilient health systems.
