Amelia Alfred is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, School of Public Health and Social Sciences, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Tanzania. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Environmental Health Sciences from MUHAS and a Master of Science in Environmental Science from Shivaji University, India.
Her research interests encompass environmental health, climate change, water quality, environmental exposure assessment, air pollution, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and sustainable environmental management. In addition to research, Amelia teaches environmental health students, supervises research, fieldwork, and provides technical consultation on environmental health field.
Her long-term research goal is to generate high-quality evidence that informs policies and interventions addressing environmental and public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries.
Amelia Alfred's research focuses on understanding the interactions between environmental factors and human health, with the aim of generating evidence that informs public health policies and sustainable environmental management. Her primary research interests include environmental health, air quality, water quality environmental exposure assessment, climate change and health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), environmental epidemiology, and environmental risk assessment.
Her research activities span both field-based and laboratory investigations. She has conducted studies on the performance of drinking water treatment plants and distribution systems, assessing contaminants such as microplastics, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and microbial pathogens. She is also involved in research examining the health impacts of air pollution of air pollution on Cardiovascular diseases in Dar es salaam Tanzania.
Amelia has contributed to multidisciplinary research through peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, systematic and scoping reviews, and collaborative research projects. Her ongoing work includes air pollution epidemiology for the development of evidence-based strategies for environmental health protection. She also participates in national and international research collaborations, supervises student research projects, and provides technical expertise in environmental monitoring, data analysis, and environmental health risk assessment.
Her long-term research agenda aims to advance innovative, interdisciplinary solutions to environmental and public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries by integrating environmental science, epidemiology, and public health to promote healthier and more resilient communities.
1. Air Pollution and Cardiovascular Disease Burden in Urban Tanzania (April 2026 to April 2028) funded by East African Center of Excellence for Cardiovascular Diseases (EACoECVS). Principal Investigator in a project investigating the relationship between air pollution exposure and cardiovascular disease burden in urban Tanzania. The project integrates environmental monitoring, epidemiological analysis, and healthcare linkage assessment to generate evidence for public health interventions.
2. Documentation of the Three-Star Approach in Schools and WASH FIT in Health Care Facilities, Tanzania (February 2026 to July 2026)
Contributing to the documentation and evaluation of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions in schools and healthcare facilities in collaboration as a Co-Investigator with UNICEF, with the aim of strengthening WASH implementation and improving health outcomes.
3.Development of a Training Manual for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation for Basic Education in Tanzania (2026) Funded by Shule Bora Programme.
Contributed to the development of educational training materials designed to enhance knowledge and capacity on climate change mitigation and adaptation among learners and educators in Tanzania.
4. Development of National Healthcare Waste Management Strategy (2026-2031)
contributed to technical expertise in environmental health and healthcare waste management. Supported the review of existing waste management practices, identification of system gaps, and formulation of strategic interventions to improve healthcare waste segregation, treatment, disposal, occupational safety, and environmental protection.
5. Performance Evaluation of Drinking Water Treatment Plants and Distribution Networks on Water Quality, India (2024–2025)
Principal investigator for a master's research project assessing the effectiveness of drinking water treatment plants and distribution systems in removing microplastics, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and microbial contaminants, providing evidence to support safe drinking water management.
6. Air Pollution Monitoring in Kolhapur City, India (2024–2025)
Served as an environmental scientists involved in ambient air quality monitoring, data collection, analysis, and interpretation to support research on urban air pollution and its public health implications.
7. Assessment of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Infrastructure in Schools and Health Facilities, Tanzania (2021)
Worked as a Research Assistant in a project supported by Heart to Heart Foundation Korea, conducting field data collection to evaluate WASH infrastructure in primary schools and healthcare facilities and supporting evidence-based improvements in service delivery.
