PRESIDENT OF ZANZIBAR OFFICIATES COMMEMORATION IN HONOR OF THE FIRST MUHAS CHANCELLOR, THE LATE DR. ALI HASSAN MWINYI

On February 28, 2025, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, officiated a commemoration to honor The Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, emphasized on transparency and fairness as an important criterion in the selection of the beneficiaries of the Samia Scholarship. Speaking at a press conference held at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) on 27th July, 2023 to announce the Samia Scholarship opportunity, the Minister explained that candidates who have performed better than others are the ones who will benefit from this funding an late Mwinyi to the development of education, health, and general social welfare.

During this event, the President of Zanzibar launched the Ali Hassan Mwinyi MUHAS Endowment Trust Fund (AHMMEF). This strategic initiative is aimed at supporting the sustainable development of education and research at the university, providing long-term financial support for innovative projects, academic programs, and the welfare of students and faculty.

“I congratulate the university on this initiative and encourage all people of goodwill to cooperate with the University in developing and managing this fund, as it is one way to honor and advance the vision of the late Ali Hassan Mwinyi,” said H.E. Dr. Mwinyi.

Additionally, to strengthen the training environment, healthcare services, and research, H.E. Dr. Mwinyi laid the foundation stone for the construction of the College of Medicine through the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) project at the Mloganzila campus. This is a significant step toward expanding the university’s infrastructure, increasing student enrolment, and improving the quality of training for students.

The Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, stated that under the leadership of the late Dr. Ali Hassan Mwinyi, the university has successfully increased student enrolment by over 100% at all levels, from Diploma to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). “We have every reason to be proud of his life here on earth, and as the education sector, we have a great debt to continue honoring him and the vision he had,” said Prof. Adolf Mkenda,

The Vice Chancellor of MUHAS, Prof. Appolinary Kamuhabwa, stated that this symposium will be held annually and will bring together professionals from the health and education sectors to discuss the achievements and future of these sectors.
