Our school is committed to excellence in education, research, clinical practice, and community service. We have witnessed many dimensions of successful transformation. First, the School has significantly contributed to the professionalization of Nursing in Tanzania through the establishment of various Bachelor’s degrees with its extremely high standard. We train skilled and compassionate nurses and midwives who can meet the health needs of Tanzania, the region, and beyond.

Second, the shift of teaching methodology, from knowledge-based to the competence-based curriculum, has improved the clinical skills of our graduates. We also value community engagement and collaboration with partners locally and internationally.

Third, the expansion of postgraduate activities has given the School its particular niche in the nursing profession. With a strong team of dedicated faculty, we combine teaching, research, and innovation to ensure our students receive quality and evidence-based training. As a result, the School becomes the forerunner of specialized Nursing Programs in Tanzania.

About School

Background

The School of Nursing was established in 1989 through a collaboration between the Nursing Education Department of the Muhimbili Medical Centre in Tanzania, and the Dalhousie University School of Nursing, in Canada. In 2007, when Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) became a fully-fledged university i.e., the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), and five schools were established, one of them being the School of Nursing.

Under MUCHS and later on, MUHAS, the School of Nursing remains one of the leading Schools which pioneers the advancement of the nursing profession in Tanzania. The school runs three bachelor’s degrees, and six Master of Science degree programs. Also the School enrolls students at the doctoral level, a huge milestone in advancing the profession in Africa and the world at large.

Our Programmes

  1. Undergraduate Programs

The School offers three full-time Undergraduate programs: Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing (BScN) – direct & equivalent track, Bachelor of Sciences in Nurse Anesthesia (BScNA) – equivalent track, and BSc Midwifery (equivalent track).

  1. Postgraduate Programs

The School hosts six full-time Master of Science degree programs: Master of Sciences in Emergency and Critical Care Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Psychotherapy, Midwifery and Women’s Health, Nephrology Nursing, Cardiovascular Nursing, and Oncology and Palliative Care Nursing, The School receives postgraduate students from Tanzania and other countries such as Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

The PhD candidates register in our departments, where they work closely with the supervisors in carrying out their research projects.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Direct Entry Requirement

Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at Advanced (“A”) level with minimum entry point of 8 points. Whereby one must have at least C grade in Chemistry and Biology and at least D grade in Physics.

 

Holder of Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Nursing with a minimum GPA of 3.5 or an average of B+ grade accredited by a relevant authority and approved by the University Senate. The candidate should have a certificate of secondary education examination (CSEE) with three passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Diploma in Nursing or Advanced Diploma in Nursing Education with an average of “B’’ or a minimum GPA of 3.0. In addition, an applicant must have a minimum of “D” grade in the following subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English at O-Level.

Our Departments

1. Department of Midwifery, Child and Reproductive Health

This department focuses on the health of women, newborns, children, and adolescents. It prepares students to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care across the continuum of reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. In addition to training competent practitioners, the department emphasizes leadership, advocacy, and research to address pressing health challenges in Tanzania and beyond.

The department currently has eleven (11) full-time academic staff members, including a senior lecturer, lectures, assistant lecturers, and tutorial assistants. Their areas of expertise include maternal and women’s health, pediatric nursing, neonatology, and reproductive health.

Core Functions

  • Provide high-quality education, training, and mentorship in midwifery, women’s health, child health, neonatal care, and adolescent health.

  • Conduct research to generate evidence that informs policies and practices in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, adolescent, and women’s health.

  • Support and collaborate with national programs and initiatives aiming at reducing maternal, newborn, child, and women’s morbidity and mortality.

  • Promote community engagement and deliver outreach services in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and women’s health, as well as family care and health promotion.

2. Department Clinical Nursing

This department trains students in advanced nursing specialties needed in hospitals and emergency settings. It combines medical, surgical, anesthetic, mental health, and critical care nursing to ensure graduates can handle complex health needs.

Faculty: The department hosts 21 academic staff covering nephrology, cardiovascular, oncology, anesthetic, surgical, mental health, emergency, and critical care nursing specialties.

Core Functions

  • Train undergraduate and postgraduate students in advanced hospital- and emergency-based nursing care.

  • Conduct research in chronic illnesses, critical care, oncology, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health.

  • Provide specialized training in anesthetic, perioperative, and intensive care nursing.

  • Support clinical teaching and mentorship in tertiary hospitals.

3. Department of Nursing Education and Management

This department develops the next generation of nurse leaders, educators, researchers and community health specialists. It ensures that curricula align with national competency frameworks and emerging global best practices in nursing leadership and education. Emphasizing on leadership, clinical governance, nutrition, and Community health while supporting evidence-based approaches through Nursing Research and the overall professional growth of nurses and midwives. The department organizes short courses and workshops for nurses and other professionals. Common offerings include Teaching methodology, basic qualitative research and Clinical Governance. It leads and supports research on nursing education methodologies, leadership and management practices in healthcare. The department also works with local health facilities and community setting through community field practice to promote health education, disease prevention and early detection initiatives, leveraging students and faculty to extend services beyond campus walls.

Faculty: The department hosts 10 academic staff, with expertise in leadership, education, nutrition, epidemiology, public health and community health.

Core Functions

  • Build capacity in nursing leadership and clinical governance, nursing research, nutrition and dietetics, and nursing education (teaching and learning)

  • Train students in nursing and midwifery education and teaching methodologies.

  • Conduct research and provide outreach services in nutrition, family health, and community health promotion.

  • Develop curriculum and educational resources for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

  • Develops short courses for continuing education and professional development of nurses and other health personnel
