MUHAS environmental health students together with some students from Nursing and Medicine as well as students from Sokoine university came together by starting an organization called Green Health. The main purpose of the organization is to raise awareness on how the environment interacts with human health and how to well utilize the environment with all its aspects in such a way that it brings maximum production and good health among Tanzanian communities with less effect on their health.
The 15th of February every year is an International Childhood Cancer Day which is commemorated for the purpose of increasing awareness about childhood cancer. This year Green Health joined forces in increasing awareness to Tanzanian communities together with Tanzania Environmental health student’s association (TEHSA) and Afya Popote Organization (an organization initiated by environmental health students at MUHAS with the aim of promoting, preventing and educating the public on preventive measures against diseases).
To commemorate International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD 2021), our organization conducted public awareness campaigns about Childhood cancer on our social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube short videos all at @Green Health. Our team explained well about childhood cancer, risk factors and causes, symptoms and sign, diagnosis and treatment options and prevention. Many Tanzanians have no correct information and knowledge about the early warning signs of cancers which contributes to diagnosis of the conditions at very late stage making it difficult for the disease to respond towards treatment.
To show our support to the families with children diagnosed of Cancer, we made daily picture posters with different messages about childhood cancers which lasted for seven days from 8th-15th February
In addition, we made a simple awareness walk from MPL-MUHAS to Tumaini la Maisha (A center at Muhimbili which gives care and curative services for free to hundreds of Children diagnosed with Cancer every year in Tanzania) for a charity donation.
We finalized the event with picture taking for our book of memories and appreciated everyone who took time and participated in one way or another as part of showing and creating awareness to our community and to our fellow students.
To date, Green Health organization continues to provide education by using different means of reaching the public but mostly via environment and health campaigns, different movements towards awareness as well as social medias to provide weekly health and environmental awareness and working under the global standard development goals.
Green Health organization explicitly appreciates the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences through the School of Public Health and Social Sciences under the full support of Dr. Hussein Mohammed, Mr. William Nelson and Miss Magdalena Shao from the department of Environmental and Occupational Health for their full support towards Green Health students.
